How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours for payroll

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. Seven hours and 30 minutes becomes 7 + 30 divided by 60, or 7.50 decimal hours. Seven hours and 45 minutes becomes 7.75 because 45 minutes is three quarters of an hour.

The calculator displays the decimal result to two places for a familiar payroll format. When you need to add many short entries, total the original minutes first or keep more precision until the final step. Repeatedly rounding individual entries can create a small difference in the final total.

How to convert decimal payroll hours to hours and minutes

Keep the whole-number portion as hours and multiply the decimal portion by 60. For 8.25 hours, the .25 portion becomes 15 minutes, producing 8:15.

A value such as 8.10 does not mean 8 hours and 10 minutes. One tenth of an hour equals six minutes, so 8.10 decimal hours converts to 8:06.

Why 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75, not 7.45 hours

The digits after a time colon count minutes out of 60, but the digits after a decimal point count hundredths of one whole unit. Since 45 divided by 60 equals 0.75, a 7-hour 45-minute shift converts to 7.75 decimal hours. Entering 7.45 would represent only 7 hours 27 minutes.

The same distinction explains why 8:10 converts to about 8.17 rather than 8.10. In the reverse direction, 8.10 decimal hours becomes 8 hours and 6 minutes because 0.10 multiplied by 60 equals 6.

Using decimal hours for payroll, timesheets, and invoices

Decimal hours make multiplication straightforward. If a freelancer works 7 hours 30 minutes at an hourly rate of $24, the time converts to 7.50 hours and the arithmetic is 7.50 times $24, or $180 before taxes or deductions. Payroll and billing systems may require a specific number of decimal places.

Convert each known duration with this tool, but follow the destination system's instructions for rounding and entry. Some systems accept hundredths, others use tenths or quarter-hour increments, and some calculate directly from clock punches. A decimal converter does not decide which policy applies.

Minutes to decimal conversion examples for a workday

For a short task, 35 minutes divided by 60 is 0.5833, which displays as 0.58 decimal hours. For a 6-hour 20-minute shift, 20 divided by 60 is 0.3333, so the total displays as 6.33. For 9 hours 50 minutes, 50 divided by 60 is 0.8333, producing 9.83.

In reverse, 2.40 decimal hours contains two whole hours plus 0.40 of an hour. Multiplying 0.40 by 60 gives 24 minutes, so the time is 2:24, not 2:40. Likewise, 3.65 decimal hours becomes 3 hours 39 minutes because 0.65 multiplied by 60 equals 39.

For a weekly conversion, add known durations in minutes before rounding. Five shifts of 7 hours 35 minutes total 2,275 minutes. Dividing the full total by 60 gives 37.9167 hours, which displays as 37.92. Converting and rounding each day to 7.58 first would instead produce 37.90, demonstrating why the order of operations matters. Retain the original minute values whenever the destination system allows a more precise final calculation.

How rounding affects a decimal timesheet total

Rounding rules vary. One system may round individual clock punches, another may round each daily total, and a third may round only the complete pay-period total. Those approaches can produce different results even when they begin with the same source times.
