How to calculate overtime pay for hourly employees

Regular hours are the smaller of total hours and the overtime threshold you enter. Overtime hours are any hours above that threshold. Regular pay equals regular hours multiplied by the base hourly rate. If total hours do not exceed the threshold, overtime hours and overtime pay are zero.

The overtime hourly rate equals the base rate multiplied by the selected premium. Overtime pay equals overtime hours multiplied by that overtime rate, and estimated gross pay is regular pay plus overtime pay. The calculator keeps each amount visible so the result can be checked step by step.

Time and a half calculator formula for overtime wages

Time and a half means a 1.5x pay multiplier. Multiply the regular hourly rate by 1.5 to find the overtime rate, then multiply that rate by the overtime hours. At a base rate of $20 per hour, the time-and-a-half rate is $30 per overtime hour.

A different multiplier changes only the premium calculation in this tool. A 2x multiplier turns a $20 base rate into a $40 overtime rate, while a 1.25x multiplier produces $25. Choose a value only after confirming the rule, agreement, or policy that applies.

Overtime calculator example with time-and-a-half pay

For an arithmetic example, 45 hours at $20 per hour with a 40-hour threshold and 1.5× multiplier produces 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. Regular pay is $800, the overtime rate is $30, and overtime pay is $150, for $950 estimated gross pay.

This example demonstrates the formula only. It does not state that a particular worker, location, industry, or week uses that threshold or multiplier.

How the overtime threshold changes regular and overtime hours

The threshold is the point at which this arithmetic begins assigning hours to the overtime column. With 45 total hours and a threshold of 40, the result contains 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. With the same total and a threshold of 44, it contains 44 regular hours and 1 overtime hour.

The calculator does not select the correct threshold for you. Overtime may be evaluated by day, week, pay period, jurisdiction, classification, contract, or another rule. Do not average multiple weeks or assume the default applies without checking the current requirement for the worker and work period.

Regular pay, overtime pay, and gross pay explained

Regular pay is the base-rate value assigned to regular hours. Overtime pay is the full premium-rate value assigned to overtime hours in this calculator. Gross pay is the sum of those two estimates before taxes, benefits, deductions, reimbursements, or other adjustments.

Some payroll contexts distinguish the overtime premium from the total compensation for overtime hours. This page presents the complete overtime-hours amount at the chosen multiplier. Compare the labels and formula with the payroll method you need before using the result.

Overtime calculator inputs to verify before using the estimate

Confirm that total hours cover the correct work period and exclude any time that should not be counted as worked under the applicable method. Check the hourly rate, currency, overtime threshold, and multiplier separately. A misplaced decimal in either the hours or rate can materially change every amount in the result.

If the worker has bonuses, commissions, multiple hourly rates, daily overtime, double time, or another premium tier, a single base rate and multiplier may not reproduce the required calculation. Use this page only after the necessary inputs have been established, and compare the estimate with the approved payroll record before relying on it.

Before comparing the estimate with a pay statement, confirm whether the statement shows the full overtime-hours amount or only a separate premium line. The presentation may differ even when the underlying total compensation is intended to be the same.

Overtime pay calculator legal and payroll limits

Overtime rules can depend on jurisdiction, workweek, employee classification, daily versus weekly hours, holidays, bonuses, commissions, multiple rates, and collective agreements. The calculator cannot determine which hours qualify, which earnings belong in a regular rate, or which rules apply.

Confirm eligibility, threshold, multiplier, and the correct regular rate with current authoritative guidance or a qualified payroll professional. Taxes, benefits, deductions, salary exemptions, double-time tiers, and non-hourly compensation are outside this estimate unless you have already converted them into the inputs shown.
